1. Create the server
- In Discord, click the + (Add a Server) button at the bottom of the server list.
- Choose Create My Own, then For a club or community.
- Name it so people searching for Dota 2 find it — for example "Dota 2 LFG" plus your region or language — and upload an icon.
- Open Server Settings → Enable Community. This unlocks Onboarding, a rules screen and announcement channels, which the next steps use.
2. Set up Dota 2 channels
Create a category for each group below. Voice channels get a user limit that matches a real Dota 2 party size, so lobbies don't overfill.
Start Here
| #rules | Rules and post format: medal, position, region. |
| #pick-your-roles | How to choose medal and position roles. |
LFG
| #ranked-party | Ranked All Pick parties; posts must state positions needed. |
| #turbo-and-unranked | Turbo, All Pick and Ability Draft for lower-stakes games. |
Community
| #drafts-and-builds | Draft ideas, item builds and replays. |
Voice
| Ranked Five | Five-player ranked party. User limit: 5 |
| Turbo Party | Smaller casual party. User limit: 3 |
3. Create rank and role roles
Create one role per Dota 2 rank tier (Server Settings → Roles). One role per tier is enough — per-division roles make the list too long to scan.
Position roles
Let members pick their own roles in Server Settings → Onboarding: add one question per role group so new members choose when they join. Onboarding needs at least 7 default channels, 5 of which @everyone can post in — the layout above covers that once you add a general chat channel or two.
4. Permissions and moderation
- Make #rules and #announcements read-only for
@everyone(deny Send Messages). - Turn on slowmode (30–60 seconds) in LFG channels so posts don't get buried.
- Open Server Settings → Safety Setup: set the verification level to at least Medium, and under AutoMod block spam, mention spam and harmful links.
- Create a Moderator role with Manage Messages and Timeout Members, and give it to a few trusted regulars.
Dota games are long and losses sting, so post-game blame is the main problem. Add a rule against flaming former teammates, use timeouts rather than bans for first offences, and keep replay arguments in #drafts-and-builds.
5. Add Matchmaker so your server isn't empty
The hardest part of a new LFG server is that nobody is online to play with yet. Matchmaker fixes that: it connects your server to one shared queue with Dota 2 players from every other server using the bot.
- Add Matchmaker to your server — it's free.
- Members run
/joingameand pick Dota 2, a mode and their rank. Supported modes: Ranked All Pick, Unranked & Turbo. - When a match forms, every player gets a ready-check DM to accept or decline.
- Once everyone accepts, a private voice channel is created automatically for the lobby.
6. Grow your Dota 2 server
- Ping position roles when a party is missing a pos 5 — supports are always in demand.
- Host a weekly in-house league with captains drafting from the server.
- Encourage replay reviews of close games; they create great discussion.
- Keep Turbo separate so ranked posts stay serious.
FAQ
Which Dota 2 roles should a Discord server have?
Medal roles from Herald to Immortal, plus position roles for Pos 1 to Pos 5 and Flex — the same options Matchmaker uses.
Why separate Dota 2 Turbo from ranked LFG?
Turbo players want quick casual games; ranked players want a full draft with fixed positions. Separate channels stop each from cluttering the other.
Can Matchmaker match Dota 2 players by position?
Yes. Ranked All Pick queues include a preferred position, so parties form with players covering different roles.
How many players can a Dota 2 party have in Matchmaker?
Ranked All Pick supports parties of 2, 3 or 5, and Unranked & Turbo supports 2 to 5.
